Building an Organization from Scratch

A year ago a few of my friends, mentors, and I decided to create a club. We saw the need of am organization dedicated to resolve the needs of first generation students. I had no previous executive board experience, but I knew I wanted to help the community. After a few weeks of brainstorming we had our first elections and the e-board was created. The first thing we had to create was our constitution. We were informed that other offices on campus already tried to resolve the needs of all students, including first generation. It was our job to make them realize that we needed to have a support system dedicated only to them. After many meetings and long hours of hard work, our constitution was created. After reading our constitution and understanding what our goal was, other offices agreed to let us found our club. A few weeks later, B1GS Club was officially established as an organization at Rutgers-Camden. When we got the news it was a really exciting time for all of us. We began working on the budget, logo, and future events. A year later B1GS has 81 general members and this number keeps growing every semester. This is just the beginning and we can’t wait to keep growing, improving, and helping.
